ABSTRACT
The details contained herein were developed by the Masonry Institute of Michigan in cooperation with an ad-hoc committee on Generic Wall Design. The objective of the committee was to develop and publish
user-friendly conceptual details which focus on provisions to mitigate rain penetration. Application of these details to a practical situation shall be the responsibility of the user. Details represent the committee’s opinions based on previous experiences and performance of related masonry systems. Decisions to utilize this information are not within the purview of the Masonry Institute of Michigan and are for use by professionals who are competent to evaluate the significance and limitations and who accept responsibility for application of information provided.Generic wall designs focus on provisions to minimize and control rain penetration. Structural, aesthetic and other environmental issues, i.e.: fire resistance, thermal performance, condensation and sound control are not addressed.
This multi-wythe design consists of a loadbearing, unreinforced 12"(305mm) concrete masonry unit back-up, air space, insulation and 4" (102mm) brick veneer. Included are suggestions for details at grade, sills, jambs, head conditions, parapets and movement joints.
