Lunch & Learn Presentations

Registered with the AIA Continuing Education System (AIA/CES), MIM is committed to developing quality learning presentations in accordance with outlined criteria. Health Safety Welfare credits are indicated by HSW. Designated learning units/hours will be reported directly to the CES by MIM for AIA members.

saving energy - presentation

Saving Energy with Masonry

Credit/Time: 1 hour

This presentation will discuss energy sources and consumption, and take a look at the effects that various glazing ratios have on the overall composite R-factor of a masonry wall. Also discussed will be minimum energy code requirements and a preview of new standards currently under development. A multi-wythe masonry cavity wall with three types of insulation, along with calculated R-values and effective R-values will be explained. The presentation will also take a peek at the new High R Masonry Wall Details, including a wall tie analysis that permits expanded cavity to accommodate more insulation.  A hygrothermal evaluation will be discussed for the three wall types.

understanding masonry - presentation

Understanding Masonry

Credit/Time: 1 hour

This presentation was developed for Construction
Managers through the Michigan Masonry Coalition.
Understanding Masonry will take a look at masonry’s:  1) quality of performance (special inspection), 2) cost effectiveness (initial and life cycle cost analysis), 3) scheduling efficiencies (no lead order materials), 4) energy efficiencies (higher R-values and thermal mass), and 5) system efficiencies (new structural design software).

Loadbearing Masonry’s Bottom Line

Credit/Time: 1 hour

This PowerPoint presentation will compare two masonry wall systems, loadbearing masonry and metal studs. The metal stud systems consists of three wall types based on where the insulation is placed in the assembly 1) batt insulation, 2) batt and rigid insulation and 3) rigid insulation. The comparisons will include the condensation potential and the initial construction cost.

Movement Control

Credit/Time: 1 hour

Understanding differential movement with clay masonry and concrete masonry can be challenging for the placement of expansion and/or control joints. This presentation will discuss the different types of movement masonry can experience and the different types of joints that are used for controlling movement in both clay and concrete masonry.  Banding of different materials in the same wall will be addressed.   Participants will get a clear understanding of the usage of these joints as focus is placed on providing a generic example of locating joints in a typical wall elevation.

Bracing Masonry Walls Under Construction

Credit/Time: 1 hour

Reviews Standard Practice for Bracing Masonry Walls Under Construction and the new Masonry Wallbracing Design Handbook both published by Mason Contractors Association of America. Learn how to improve life safety on the job site for masonry walls under construction.

Masonry Flashing

Credit/Time: 1 hour

Review of placing flashing and weepholes for single and multi-wythe masonry walls. Actual flashing applications and design details are discussed. Focus is on the importance of flashing and weephole systems.
