On the cover: University of Michigan’s Robert B Aikens Commons seamlessly connects historic with new and indoor with outdoor. What was once an unremarkable courtyard between exquisite buildings is now a comfortable and bright social gathering space for students and faculty. “I defy anyone to say which part of this building was built in 2010, and which was built in 1931,” Dean Evan Caminker challenged at the grand opening of the space. Former exterior stone facades seem right at home as interior wall finish when bathed in the natural light from the glass roof.
