On the cover: Terracotta adorns the parapet and window surrounds of the Fitzgerald, upscale condominium tower in Grand Rapids, originally built as a YMCA in 1915. Design Architect Michael Graves and Associates, NJ, recommended SmithGroup, Detroit, be commissioned to investigate and evaluate the entire exterior envelope of the 1927 Cret Building and its modern additions relative to humidity and temperature control required for art preservation. Bookmatched and fleuri cut gray-veined marble from the quarry which supplied stone for the original building now clads its addition beautifully.

17-story, 400-room hotel is part of a $275 million expansion to Motor City Casino which pays tribute to both Detroit's auto industry and the historic brick neighborhood in which it resides. Brick from the temporary casino, the former Wonder Bread factory circa 1915, was matched for the addition doubling it's size. At the suggestion of mason contractor Mike Harman, Leidal & Hart, adding 418,000 brock to the design for the hotel kept the masonry look of the neighborhood and brought the project within budget.
